The Conference
Join In. Be Equipped.
Saturday 23 August 2025
9.30am - 4.30pm
The future we are moving towards is a breathtaking image: a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. Can you imagine it? Right now, God has brought migrants from East and South Asia with increasing numbers to Sydney and other cities across Australia (Acts 17.26-27).
Yet our local churches tell the story of unfulfilled opportunity to reach those God has placed in our own backyard. How can we lovingly and effectively share Jesus with the precious people from these cultural backgrounds? Have we already made assumptions about who they are, our place in God's mission and what is possible? How do we from different cultural backgrounds work together to reach the nations God has brought here?

We need to join together for our city. No matter your background, this conference organised by the Archbishop held at St Albans MBM in Rooty Hill on Saturday 23 August 2025 is for any Christian who wants to be equipped in reaching those around us with Christ's love.

This conference is a collaboration of the SATYA Network (who function as the Archbishop's South Asian Advisory Board) and the Archbishop's Chinese Advisory Board. These Sydney Anglican groups welcome Christians from any denomination to join in with us.
The Program

Seminars
We know how valuable seminars are! Sign up for 2 each.
How to Reach Beyond Our Own Cultural Groups
Ken Tang and Jonathan Daniel

Our default is to connect with people like us. How do we practically embrace a more Biblical vision where the whole body of Christ reaches their local community? How can people with one rich cultural background reach people from another? This seminar will cover lessons of experience and practical next steps for anyone who seeks to grow in this area.
The Opportunities and Pitfalls of Language Specific Ministries
Clive Buultjens and Grace Lung

What do you think about the homogenous unit principle? Isn’t it ideal for someone to hear the gospel in their heart language? But aren’t Christian communities meant to be reflective of the diversity of their community? This seminar is for gospel workers or volunteer leaders who are interested in further wrestling with this tension, sharpening their thinking and discerning how to build ministries in their context.
How to witness a Household, not just the Individual
M J James and R James

We all know that South and East Asian cultures are collective and not individualistic, so how do we contextualize our ministry practices to honour that principle? Come along and learn how to reach the newly arrived family in your neighbourhood with the gospel, and help them navigate their broader family even after they become a family that follows Jesus.
The Unique Role of 2nd Generation Migrants in the Kingdom
Bp. Peter Lin and Jeri Jones Sparks

From Indian Matchmaking to Kim's Convenience: the unique struggles of being a 2nd Gen Migrant are being captured in mainstream media. What about the opportunities? If you are or love a 2nd Gen Migrant, this seminar will engage you with the incredible opportunities that are uniquely available in God’s Kingdom. This seminar will particularly cover the opportunities in the context of family, ministry and evangelism
The Commonalities and Differences South and East Asian Cultures
Ben George and David Yung

Not all Asians are the same but we all love rice, right? Can you copy and paste approaches to all Asian groups? All welcome to come along and discuss the overlaps and distinctions between South and East Asian cultures, particularly when it comes to evangelistic engagement. Our understanding of people can greatly deepen our ability to love and reach them with the good news of Jesus. Things might get spicy, but in a good way!
Lessons from the Chinese Church
Ying Yee and Danny Au Yeung

Established in Australia longer than South Asian Christian communities, there are lessons we must not miss from the Chinese Christian legacy in our country. Come hear stories of how the place of elders, honour/shame and other cultural complexities have shaped Christian discipleship and evangelism. This is for any one who is interested to learn from strengths and risks to catalyze reflection on their own contexts.
